Beach beetle reinvents the wheel

Prod the larva of the ocean beach tiger beetle (Cicindela dorsalis media) and it will leap into the air, curve into a hoop and roll away, propelled by the wind. The beetle is one of the few non-human animals that use the wheel. Alan Harvey at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro and his student Sarah Zukoff stumbled across the remarkable behaviour after Zukoff accidentally kicked a sand dune and dislodged some beetle larvae. It’s unclear what benefit the beetles get from this odd form of locomotion, but Harvey thinks it may help them escape their main predator,
